Emerging Institutional Shareholder Activism in Asia
On November 23, 2005, ACGA gave our second lecture at the Faculty of Law, Hong Kong University on the topic of emerging shareholder activism in Asia. Our presentation built upon our first in November 2004 and touched on the following topics:
- A definition of "shareholder activism", including different degrees and types of activism.
- The growth of engaged institutional investors in Asia and what is driving this activism.
- A reality check on why so few institutional investors are involved, including domestic pension and state investment funds.
- The emergence of retail activists.
- The case of China.
- The role of regulators in creating an environment in which activism can develop.
